Pierre, SD (LifeNews.com) -- A South Dakota Indian tribe is throwing a monkey wrench into the state's plans to ban virtually all abortions in the state. Should the ban become law, one tribe says it will open up an abortion business on their tribal lands, which wouldn't be subjected to the abortion ban.
Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota, says Sioux nation sovereignty means the new ban doesn't apply. As a result, she said she will lead an effort to build a Planned Parenthood abortion center at the Pine Ridge Reservation.
To me, it is now a question of sovereignty, she told Tim Giago who runs a web site called Indianz.com.
I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction," Fire Thunder said.
A former nurse and health care worker, Fire Thunder is the first woman president of the Sioux nation.

I'm confused...I thought you lived in Arizona now...
I do. I live in Bullhead City, which is on the other side of the Colorado River. I can see the casinos from my window.
I'm over in Laughlin so much, sometimes I really do feel like I live there! But technically, I'm in Bullhead City, AZ.
Squaw bury Shortcake...
Thanks for clarifying...I thought I was losing it there!
We need some activism on this one!!

I used to live within a couple hours of Wichita. Where were the good neighborhoods? When I was there, I wasn't cognizant of that type of thing so I only had to worry about where the bad parts of town where since that is where I found find the people I was looking for at the time. (I'm not trying to imply that there aren't good neighborhoods but I could use a little community real estate lesson on Wichita and what has happened since 1995)
Where tiller place is in a nice post WW2 neighborhood. Wichita has gone and is going through a growning phase. The newest homes are way west what use to be rabbit hunting grounds so to say. The east side has always been upper middle class. hope this helps
Talk about genocide?
Ah, but most Sioux are either Catholic or Episcopalian believers who oppose abortion.
More importantly, those following traditional religion also view abortion as murder.
And so I suspect she will not succeed...
Infantcide was once a common practice among Indian tribes in what is now the northwest US and Canada. Also common
in Eskimo tribes. I don't know if that is relative to this
issue.
