The only fix I see is that the system has to reach critical mass and fail totally before anyone will face the issue.
We can see the bullet heading at us right now, no one wants to acknowledge the seriousness of what happens when that bullet hits.
It might take 5 years, it might take longer.

Exactly, once the state takes over something it is hard to pry it away. Welfare Reform is one success story, also banking and airline deregulation. School vouchers would do wonders for education, as would privatization of medicaid.
Brazil hit the wall with its social security system a few years ago.
If we do nothing, we will hit the wall at some point and the retirement age will have to be increased immediately. That is not the way to address the problem--put it off.

They were forced to raise the retirement age for most people to 65 for Men 60 for Women (previously 55 I believe). Which hurt the poor since many poor don't live that long.
