SAN FRANCISCO, March 22, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In one of the most startling attacks on the Catholic Church coming from a governmental body in the United States in half a century, the governing body of the city of San Francisco - the Board of Supervisors - voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a non-binding resolution blasting the Catholic Church for its opposition to homosexual adoption.
While many city's residents agree with the Church's stand against homosexual adoption, the resolution stated "It is an insult to all San Franciscans when a foreign country, like the Vatican, meddles with and attempts to negatively influence this great city's existing and established customs and traditions, such as the right of same-sex couples to adopt and care for children in need."
The city supervisors levelled an ad hominem attack on former San Francisco Archbishop William Levada, who has been appointed to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), one of the most senior posts in the Church. " Cardinal Levada is a decidedly unqualified representative of his former home city, and of the people of San Francisco and the values they hold dear,'' the resolution stated.
The supervisors also demonstrated their childishness as they attempted another dig at the Cardinal by indicating in the resolution that the CDF was once known as the Office of the Inquisition. "That the Board of Supervisors urges Cardinal William Levada, in his capacity as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican (formerly known as Holy Office of the Inquisition), to withdraw his discriminatory and defamatory directive that Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco stop placing children in need of adoption with homosexual households," reads the resolution.
The resolution attacked the teaching of the Catholic Church that homosexual adoption does "violence" to children since they would be placed in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development. The resolution blasted the teaching as "hateful and discriminatory rhetoric (that) is both insulting and callous, and shows a level of insensitivity and ignorance which has seldom been encountered by this Board of Supervisors.''
Demonstrating their own profound ignorance, at least in terms of biological realities, the supervisors contend, "Same-sex couples are just as qualified to be parents as are heterosexual couples." Concluding, the board urged current San Francisco "Archbishop Neiderauer and the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco to defy all discriminatory directives of Cardinal Levada."

St. Francis is standing on a bowling ball?
For damages I would demand all city property plus normal tax proceeds for the next decade.
Amen!
Somehow I can't picture this august body lambasting orthodox Jews or Muslims for advocating the same position. I even wonder how many of these nitwits realize that their once-glorious city was founded by monks and named for St. Francis.
It actually is. The State of Vatican City is a sovereign state within Italy and the smallest country in the world. They have their own currency, their own citizenship, and their own passports. It has observer status at the UN. I think it actually can vote, but it refuses to.
Aren't these the same numbnuts who voted against having the USS Iowa (FDR's favorite) in port and declared the US does not need a military for any reason? Shameful.
Gee, you expect fewer homeless crack addicts in downtown SF within the next 10 years?
Actually, in terms of the USS Iowa, there were a number of conservatives (me included) who didn't WANT San Francisco to get the ship.
One needs only to look at what the Bay Air-heads have done to the USS Hornet (stuck away in an old naval shipyard at the back end of a grimy industrial park with very little signage to guide you there) to realize that we don't deserve to have such a fine piece of history within our local area.
LOL!
The dot com era "gentrified" (yuppified if you prefer) large parts of the "South of Market" area, but now all of those gay web scripters and interior designers are very short on work.
The city council is doing nothing but exacerbate the situation.
When Wells Fargo and Bank of America decide they've had enough, the rest of the city will die.
And not a moment too soon.
Absolutely agree with you and others on this. I'd rather see USS Iowa scuttled than degraded by being forced to display an exhibit about discrimination against gays in the military. But it is infuriating to have this group of moonbats insult her history like that. And for anyone, much less an elected politician, to suggest we don't need a military after the terrorist attacks is truly baffling. Would they feel the same way, I wonder, if they witnessed San Franciscans throwing themselves out of 100 story buildings, as our our friends and neighbors did here in NY on 9/11?
Is Satan overplaying his hand?
Anyway, this makes me proud to be a Catholic.
Oh yes, and San Francisco (St. Francis) is rolling over in his grave. It's only a matter of time before the sodomites change the city's name.
Ten years???? More like ten minutes!
Who exactly named San Francisco?
The greatest comedic episode in movie history, if you ask me.
"I give SF another 10 years before the majority of downtown residents are homeless crack addicts."
LOL, I left SF 4 years ago after 30 years and most downtown residents were already homeless crack addicts and had been for years. I don't think you've visited SF in many many years.
Better not, you don't know what you'll catch...
Perhaps they could add St. Anthony...the patron saint of lost items...to their cause for petition.
Seems that they've completely lost their minds!
