NEW YORK -- Invoking Biblical themes, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton joined immigration advocates Wednesday to vow and block legislation seeking to criminalize undocumented immigrants.

Clinton, a potential 2008 presidential candidate and relative latecomer to the immigration debate, made her remarks as the Senate prepares to take up the matter next week.

Clinton renewed her pledge to oppose a bill passed in December by the House that would make unlawful presence in the United States _ currently a civil offense _ a felony.

The smartest woman in the world apparently doesn't realize that ILLEGAL immigration is already a criminal offense.

Don't know if its true but I've read it is not a crime to be in the country illegally but it is a crime to cross the border illegally meaning that the cops and sheriffs etc. can't arrest someone for being an illegal.

Problem is that illegals will NEVER vote for Republicans in high numbers...

"Illegals" shouldn't be voting in the first place. I wonder what the stats are on party registration and voting, though, for those "illegals" whom Reagan granted amnesty for and eventually became citizens?

Being in the country after crossing the border other than a point of embarkation/debarkation, and not presenting yourself for inspection within 48 hours, is currently a federal CIVIL offense. Correct me if that's not correct, Marine Inspector.

The bill Hillary is opposing (even a broken clock is right twise a day) would make that a felony, but also criminalize ANY assistance to illegals, including Holy Communion by the Catholic Church - which is why Mahony has come out against it too.

I believe AMERICAN Catholics are of a different mind on abortion (unfortuntely) than on illegal immigration - for instance, a significant number voted for "pro-choice" Kerry.

How many "illegals" that Reagan granted amnesty to eventually became U.S. citizens and registered Republican? You don't think GWB and his brother Jeb know about that too?

P.S. Georgia2006 - has Ralph Reed taken a position on illegal immigration yet?

Ok, then the bill is too broad. Thanks for the info.

If she picks up all the Kerry Catholic vote, I submit this will be judged to have been more than "posturing".

"That's what you think, because you have misjudged the backlash - she just aligned herself with the largest Catholic Archdiocese in the country."

When I responded, I did not realize the bill was so broad it prohibit holy communion. If that is accurate then the bill writer was foolish - the American people would never accept that and courts would never allow it. Sadly, if you are correct about that then Hillary made the right call.

No problem. In all fairness, the bill's sponsors claim that Holy Communion would not barred (it obviously does not single that out by name), but a reasonable interpretation of the broad prohibition against any "assistance" (I think that's the word - the entire bill was posted on a thread recently) could indeed include everything the Catholic Church does for illegal aliens.

This is another nail in Hillary's political coffin.

The article tends to imply that illegal immigration is not already criminal, but it is. No further legislation is needed to make it criminal. We might need further legislation to strengthen the penalties for violation, however.

Which one is it: "This is another nail in Hillary's political coffin" or "No further legislation is needed to make it criminal"?
