Anyone here spend time in Japan?

I lived there for the summer between high school and college (92) as part of a youth leadership program. I didn't learn much Japanese other than a few survival phrases and, funny enough, commercials.. as for reading Japanese, not a bit.. We had 'mentors' that helped us by writing down instructions for cabs in Japanese and directed us to places that catered to English speakers. I was surprised in that one can actually survive in Tokyo only speaking English. One trick is doormen and concierges at hotels usually speak English are are always happy to help, even if you aren't staying at their hotel.

Comedian John Pinnet said he can speak two phrase in 25 languages...""Feed me, I'm hungry!" and "Where's the bathroom?"

Do you have any insight into why the Japanese like American comedians so much?
