I can't find a story on this that isn't from this AP report. Seems to be a single source story.

I have never heard an explanation of these tapes. I assume these were semi-public meetings and they knew they were being recorded.
Any tapes on there about Sadaam ordering tens of thousands of murders, tortures, his sons raping, etc? I doubt it. Any talk of trying to blow up former President Bush?

Some of Saddam's inner circle talked of reviving the programs, saying, "The factories will remain in our brains." But Saddam talked about converting the factories to beneficial uses. This statement set off my BS detector.

Are these the same tapes that were reported to have hours of Saddam's conversations discussing an ACTIVE weapons program?
OK - I'm confused - either there is recorded evidence of Saddam having a WMD program (as repeatedly reported here and several other places), or there is evidence recorded that he did NOT have WMD.... It cannot really be both ways.

Here's another AP report from the Seattle P-I. More info there. They don't specify which transcript this was taken from, so there's no way to verify what's being reported. Well isn't that convenient

Jeff Greenfield cherry-picked this story in IMUS this morning as further proof GWB is wrong on everything. No mention of the dozen translations countering his argument. (Yawn..., what else would one expect).

Bluff implies that Saddam didn't have WMDs ... I am not so sure. There would have been no point in bluffing a loaded gun, you will loose every time.

More from the AP:
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1751481
Amer Mohammed Rashid, a top weapons program official, told a 1996 presidential meeting he laid out the facts to the U.N. chief inspector.
"We don't have anything to hide, so we're giving you all the details," he said he told Rolf Ekeus.
In his final report in October 2004, Charles Duelfer, head of a post-invasion U.S. team of weapons hunters, concluded Iraq and the U.N. inspectors had, indeed, dismantled the nuclear program and destroyed the chemical and biological weapons stockpiles by 1992, and the Iraqis never resumed production.
Saddam's goal in the 1990s was to have the Security Council lift the economic sanctions strangling the Iraqi economy, by convincing council members Iraq had eliminated its WMD. But he was thwarted at every turn by what he and aides viewed as U.S. hard-liners blocking council action.
