The Associated Press reports secretary of state Condoleezza Rice is not applying for the newly opened post of NFL commissioner - not now, anyhow, her spokesman said carefully Monday, March 20. Rice is enjoying being secretary of state "at the moment," spokesman Sean McCormack said. The wiggle-room in his response after NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced he would retire resonated off frequent only half-joking statements by Rice that as a lifelong football fan she aspires to run the league one day. New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft seems to be in Rice's corner for the football post.
At the time, she was widely considered to be the top choice for Bush's National Security Adviser. She clearly was interested in the outcome of the election. We talked some politics, some weather (it was kind of a nasty drizzle that night), and we did a lot of speculating about what was happening in Florida that caused Gore to "un-concede".
I now regret we didn't talk any football.
What a memorable evening! Wow, DG, that is historical! Truly. I hope you have put your memories on tape.

LOL!!!
hey you walked into that one buddy :)
Not scrolling to all the other posts here by now but that is a stunning ( as in drop you in your tracks) photo on so many levels. Artistic (first on purpose), political, racial, gender, and so damn smart of a smile.
No, no I didn't! You pulled a "Wile E. Coyote painting a tunnel onto a rock" on me!
Damn Browns fans...
LOL
Not even close. I mentioned the encounter a couple of times previously at FR, but not quite to that degree of detail.
And it really doesn't mean squat in the overall history of the republic. I was the one who was honored to be there at the right place at the right time, but it was one of those really cool things. Election Night 2000, standing beside Condi waiting for Dubya to come out, and he never did. Just the Jumbotron at the side with Candy Crowley on CNN saying Al Gore had withdrawn his telephone concession conversation with Dubya.
Definitely one of those WOW moments.
Yes, it is, I agree and she is a concert pianist which makes that photo all the more breathtaking.
Well, I think you should or put your memories on paper -- for your family! You were up close and personal to history! Condi Rice! WOW - WOW -WOW! There's no denying it! I love that you told me. I have already called my daughter and told my husband!
Ah... the insults from a poster who must have a gun pointed at his head forcing him to this thread. Get lost.
If you don't have anything nice to say..........
