My guess is that aside from the sheer volume of material he compromised,
Pollard is locked up for life...to keep him from blabbing on evening
TV about how he easily duped his bosses for so long.

The only problem that I have with this decision is that Sandy Berger is not Pollard's cellmate for life for the theft and destruction of highly classified documents.
