In state's GOP heartland, questions - Many die-hard Republicans shaking their heads over Bush, war
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/20/6 | Carla Marinucci

Oceanside, San Diego County -- Dennis Dalbey, armed with scissors, an electric hair clipper and a steady hand, has given dozens of Camp Pendleton's young Marines the regulation haircut before they head to combat in Iraq.

In his Cut-Rite Barbershop on the Coast Highway, he wears his loyalty to those customers openly -- the business is adorned with painted yellow ribbons, flags and "We support our troops'' banners.

But these days, Dalbey, a Republican and a self-described conservative who voted for President Bush, is not nearly as supportive of the commander in chief.

"Enough is enough,'' he said of the war while showing Lance Cpl. Aaron Kernell, 19, from Tennessee, to a red Naugahyde chair for a cut. "If they haven't got this thing settled by year's end, it's time to bring the boys home.''

As the nation marks the third anniversary of the country's entry into the Iraq war, Dalbey's deeply felt pessimism echoes through a region that remains California's most loyal Republican stronghold. The feelings, from California voters who have backed Bush, underscore the depth of political troubles for the president and his party in a year of midterm congressional elections.

With the war still raging, and the public growing increasingly sour over the outlook, Bush's approval ratings have plummeted. The once-positive images of the president and his party, which controls both houses of Congress, have been shredded in the wake of controversies ranging from the Dubai port deal to the response to Hurricane Katrina to lobbying scandals.

The president last week took to the stump to plead with Americans about the necessity for resolve in Iraq. But a tour through congressional districts of California's Inland Empire and northern San Diego County -- Republican-dominated districts that have voted twice for the president -- found surprisingly strong doubts

Bravo Sierra. I may shake my head over immigration, campaign finance, and so-called "comnpassionate" federal spending. But on the war...I support President Bush 100%. He didn't need the WMD issue to go into Iraq and going in there was the absolute right things to do in the WOT.

This is like, the 5th article I have read in the past three days, about people who "voted for Bush twice" and are now disgusted with him. Yawn. More drive-by yellow journalism..

This is from the SF Chronicle...how do they venture to offer an opinion of any validity whatsoever on an area of the nation they despise? They have no clue, nor do they dare travel to such places.

Interesting that the liberals still think projecting anti-war sentiments on Republicans will win an election.

Sure hope no one tells them it is runaway entitlement spending and illegal immigration that is really putting this conservative off.

When did you ever read the headline, "Die Hard Democrats Question Democrat Pary?"
Or, "Long time Democrats Leave Party in Droves"

Imagine that, a West Coast Marxist rag, making political/analytical judgments about a region (The heartland) from which it has no clue or understanding thereof.

No wonder they are shrinking out of significance. Even among the leftists they helped create.

I'm not all that thrilled with Bush on many issues either, but; most of these people are making their minds up on the MSM reports, MSM blurbs, headlines, and false DemonRat rhetoric passed on by the MSM. In other words, they are uninformed, just like our Congress was on the Dubai Ports Deal, where they were shocked, but 80% of our port's management is already in foreign hands.

The President made a terrible political mistake by not adequately differentiating the current phase of the Iraq operation from the "war," which ended very quickly.

We have been in Germany for sixty years. Is the "war" still on there?
