The slogans and pronouncements of these protesters, whose stridency persists, undiminished, to this day, commonly identify Washington as the "axis of evil," and America as the world's foremost "terror state." No rally was ever held at an Iraqi embassy or consulate during the run-up to the war, nor did any protest publicly call upon Saddam to disarm. Instead the demonstrators decried the U.S. as the aggressor and referred to President Bush as a "terrorist," a "baby killer," and an "oil thief." Among the more popular slogans adorning the placards displayed at the rallies have been: "The Unelected Idiot Is Going to Start World War III"; "Bush, Stop Your Terror"; "Bush the Baby Killer"; "Illegally Installed, Immorally Behaved: He's Not My President"; "President-Bush is an Oxy-Moron"; "George W's War Drums Dishonor and Destabilize Lawful Democracies"; "Spoiled Fascist Cowboy"; "Bush Exploits 9/11 Tragedy for Dirty Oil"; "Bush Likes to Steal Presidential Elections and Iraqi Oil"; and "No More Lies: Regime Change Here."
In a similar spirit, the featured speakers at the anti-Iraq War rallies are unanimous in their condemnation of America's alleged imperialism, militarism, and racism. At one demonstration in New York City, NAACP chairman Julian Bond denounced America's "pursuit of empire, not world peace." Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies characterized the current conflict as a "war for empire and for oil." Civil rights activist Al Sharpton excoriated President Bush for pursuing a "philosophy of international domination" that involved "send[ing] our children to foreign soil to protect oil interests." A Muslim American Society representative complained that Muslims are "being discriminated against" all over the United States, likening their treatment to the World War II-era internment of Japanese Americans. New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman lamented "the Bush administration's undeclared war on our civil liberties."
It explains, for example: (a) how large numbers of well-intentioned, unsuspecting people are manipulated into supporting anti-American agendas by hard-core radical organizers from groups like the Young Communist League, the Workers World Party, and the Revolutionary Communist Party - all in the name of "peace"; (b) how today's anti-war groups portray themselves as pacifist and as human rights organizations whose stated purpose is to end war and promote the general welfare of humanity, while their leaders commonly support the communist system that has murdered and enslaved countless millions of people; many of these leaders have ties to the communist dictatorships in North Korea, China, and Cuba; (c) how "anti-war" is frequently synonymous with "anti-American," since protesters do not gather to denounce military actions anywhere in the world unless the U.S. (or its close friend Israel) is involved; and (d) how modern-day "pacifists" tend to loathe capitalism, viewing it as the root of all evil in the world.
Numbers are down?? Gee, when I watched my local news with the girl from Washington DC today, she emphasized there were THOUSANDS WORLDWIDE who protested. Huh. Imagine that, the MSM getting it wrong again.
