I hope that sure that the President and team are trying to develop a strategy that eliminates the nuclear facilities without damaging the rest of the country. I can't imagine how the regime can be toppled without boots on the ground, but there must be a regime change.
If we are lucky enough to remove the nuclear threat and pave the way for a democratically-elected Iran, the islamic world (knowing how it respects power) will certainly look differently at the Great Satan. It will never like the U.S., because we are the agents of modernity (just as islam is the agent of barbarity)...but the islamic delusions of superiority will be forever shattered.
A proper assault on Iran will be the 21st century Lepanto or Vienna. Resurgent Islam will only deflate after a huge and spectular defeat. Then it will go more or less dormant for a century or two until it happens all over again. The cycle can end only two ways, with the triumph of Islam and sharia worldwide or with 100% apostasy and/or conversion of Mohammedans.
As the article says: "They are spreading their nuclear facilities around the country burying many of them in hardened bunkers in the sides of mountains and in some cases, under populated areas such as the secret underground emergency command center beneath the Abbas Abad district in north Tehran and near sacred religious shrines."
There will not be any easy choices in this conflict.
Regarding the other comment on the domino theory, perhaps Bush's plan of knocking off the major terror threats one by one will in hindsight be a mistake. I know a lot of people, (especially Freepers!) wanted to go into Iran at the same time we went after Saddam.
