A pair of state Senate candidates are returning campaign donations from a casino owner indicted on felony tax evasion charges.

Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, returned $6,500 in contributions from Lucky Chances owner Renato Medina. Former San Mateo County Supervisor Mike Nevin returned $3,500 he received from Medina. Yee and Nevin are campaigning for the Democratic nomination for state Senate in California's eighth district.

"Without passing judgment on Mr. Medina, I believe this action is essential to maintaining the public trust," Yee said in a statement Thursday.

Nevin spokesman Seamus Murphy said that the campaign decided to return the money to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

"We certainly don't condone what Medina is being accused of, and we hope he's able to work out those legal problems," Murphy said.

I don't live anywhere near his district, but sometimes I wonder whether it might be better to vote in the Democrat primaries to help choose less extreme candidates, especially since the D's have won most statewide elections in recent years. But, usually I remember that most D candidates in CA are about the same, so there's not much benefit in choosing between them, and one vote doesn't usually make a difference anyway.
