Personally I would like to see some distance between China and the US and a closer relationship with Russia. Putin and the old KGB cronies club is problematic but I think Russia could be a top notch ally with some tweaking of the relationship.
I would rather see closer ties with India.

I agree. The extension of obsolete NATO closer to Russia's border simply chased Russia deeper into the Chinese camp. We should be trying to lever Russia away from China. One way would be to show favoritism to Russian oil (by tariffing Middle Eastern oil) in exchange for eliminating military cooperation with China. Since it'll take a while to wean ourselves from foreign oil, at least it would be better to switch that dependency from the Middle East to Russia.
