And the question about principle is whether it is a matter of state to impose principles. The Dutch have decided that it is not. They can tolerate gay marriage. Does that make them all liberal and decadent? They don't seem to be to me.
I could respect the idea of privatizing marriage and leaving it up to religious institutions as they would any other sacrament.
Yes, but the state protects and enforces property rights. Do you have an idea for privatizing them?
I'm guessing you're referring to the community property a married couple would share with each other. I've never been married so I don't know all the property issues involved. I know in Broward County in Florida same-sex couples can register as domestic partners and have the same rights and obligations WRT property as marrieds do, but there's no lawful marriage in the eyes of the state.
