"The thing is, Tx, he shouldn't allow himself to be a punching bag. Alberto Gonsales has done some excellent press conferences, and he shuts down their questions when they are out of line. McClellan looks like he is being whipped. He seems like a nice guy, it's just a case of being too nice. You can't control the press being Mr. Nice Guy. If they start their attacks, he should shut off the question and move on to someone else. If a press person persists, have security remove them. You can bet it wouldn't keep happening if that were done."
That's exactly right! But their is a select group here on FR that think the new tone stuff should be given more time to work. That has been the biggest miscalculation the Bush team made when they came to Washington. The Rats and the Drive By media hated the GOP/Bush before Bush came to town and they will hate the GOP and Bush when he leaves town. Look at how much they hated Reagan and still do to this day by trying to minimize his great success like ending the Cold War.
On the Press Secretary himself. I thought he was out of his league from the day he took over. He has the Deer in the Headlights look. I dispise the Clinton's like most of here, but they had one hell of a rapid response operation and when the press got out of line (rare like a South Texas snow storm) and gave them bad coverage, they not only tried to quash the story, but they threw it back at the media outlet or reporter that stepped out of line.
IMO, Bush & Co. can do the same thing, but unlike the Clinton's, they don't have to lie about it. The first step is to get rid of McClellan.

Would it be too much of the WH to ask that they have reporters instead of accusers?Bingo!
And McClellan is a lightweight.
Too bad Ari retired. I don't think he would have put up with this crap. Personally, I'd take Gregory and Thomas out behind the proverbial wood-shed.

I agree. McClellan is ineffective, but he seems to be nice enough. I'm surprised that the president has kept him on for so long. He's not helping. I can only figure that he's from a TX political family. I believe his father worked for LBJ.

Yeah...I know.
I think maybe he SHOULD do what you suggest..at least once..have Gregory removed from the room when he gets so arguementative...
But, then THAT would be a HUGH story, about how Bush can't "control" his staff..blah, blah.
I have come to the conclusion, that, like in the legal system, where a reporter doesn't have to give up a source (which means he/she can make one up)...
Since the MSM can make or break a politician....THEY truly do have the most POWER in American, not the POTUS, Congress, or SCOTUS>

I agree, everything you posted!
Like I said, I don't dislike the guy at all. I just think he could be better used elsewhere. Press room needs someone who going to take the media to task, control the briefing, not be controlled.

Whenever I hear the words "Clinton" and "Iraq" in the same sentence, the following comes to mind:

given the status quo - it would be better to cancel the daily white house briefing so long as McClellan is the spokesman. let other administration officials give press conferences on topics related to their departments.
having this crap go on day after day with McClellan, is just nuts. people here may think it helps to make fools out of the media - but its not working, allowing them to conduct themselves like this while McClellan babbles and stammers simply adds to the sense that the administration is disorganized and off message - that's why Gregory and Thomas do this, they understand the goal they are trying to achieve.
To: Txsleuth
Don't think you're going to get an answer from that one.

then have Bush step into the briefing room when this kind of crap goes on - and dismiss Gregory himself.

I loathe McClellon... he is like taking a sharp thumb tack to a gun fight...
I don't loathe him but I do wish they would replace him. What is the WH "strategery" in keeping McClellen in his post? There has got to be a reason for keeping him there when he would do so much better behind the scenes.
Just once I'd like to see a Gen. Honore/G. Gordon Liddy/Al Haig-type have a go with these "correspondents."
"Lock the doors. We're hunkering down until every question these "ladies" have to ask is satisfied."
Bring in R. Lee Ermey, for Heaven's sake. Answer their idiotic questions, Ermey-style and put it on Pay-Per-View.

Was David drunk...stoned....or just nuts?.... Those three conditions aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. I'd say he's all three.
