Last election, though, SLO county was I believe the only coastal county in California to go Republican.

Nope. Orange County, San Diego County, and I believe Ventura County, plus the northernmost county in the state (I forget its name) went Republican, I'm pretty sure.

I just remember looking at a red state/blue state map and noticing how SLO county stuck out like a sore thumb. You're probably right. Orange has traditionally been conservative but who knows these days.
