"... a type infrequently seen in the U.S."

So... where *IS* is frequently seen? Duh?

Adult mumps is a serious illness, especially for men.

Must be occuring in those who either never had the good sense to get them as a kid or those young enough to have had the vaccine but didn't.

Unless it's a virus variant the that the vaccine doesn't cover. Which would be interesting.

Indeed, it can be very hard on women as well. My grandmother, who had never had them her whole life, managed to catch them from....moi.

She was really very sick and laid up a long time.

I had all the childhood disease vaccinations before going overseas at an Army brat in the 1950s. The Army wouldn't allow any American into Japan without a full shot record.

I had them as a child and remember being so very sick. I thought most people now got the vaccine, especially kids and college students.

Probably among the anti-vaccine crowd.

I've never had the mumps either, but didn't they come out with a vaccine for it? I could have sworn that they did and my kids were inoculated with it.

I think you either want to get chicken pox and mumps early in life or get a vaccine to prevent them ever.

I believe mumps in adult men often makes them sterile, not a good side effect if you're young and wanting to start a family.
