Laura Bush: U.S. ready for a woman president

Preferably a Republican one, first lady says

Laura Bush, wife of President Bush, said Tuesday the United States is ready to have a woman president -- preferably a Republican.

She offered her opinion while touring an exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts with Marta Sahagun de Fox, wife of Mexican President Vicente Fox, and Eliane Karp de Toledo, wife of Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo. The exhibit features archaeological finds from Mexico and Peru that show that, long before Europeans arrived, women served as warriors, governors, artists, poets and priestesses.

"They really show what a heritage we have in our hemisphere, a really very, very organized and intellectual society," Mrs. Bush said.

During an exchange with reporters, Mrs. Bush was asked if the United States was prepared to have a woman in the Oval Office.

"Sure, absolutely," she replied. "I'm voting for the Republican woman."

You know the Bushs' and the Clintons are buddies. I hope they aren't thinking of helping Mrs. Clinton so as to keep the presidency in these two families.

Women are usually harder on women than men are. I'm a woman and I usually preferred working with men too, but not always. Just depends on the person. I really don't care about the gender of the president. I want someone who is resolute, moral and can make difficult decisions. Someone who is conservative, pro-life, can make military as well as wise education decisions. The list goes on. And one who can manage a budget and control our borders!

I've worked with many women, and for several female (as well as male) bosses. Some of the female bosses were horrible -- the worst were self-styled "feminists", who had internalized all of the worst feminist propaganda about the "patriarchy", along with a very "cartooney" view about what management and leadership was all about.

More recently, female bosses have been as good or better than male bosses -- pretty much the same spectrum as with the men. I think that the improvement has come with: longer experience in the workforce; less stereotyping of men; greater self-confidence; and role models, who are successful leaders, rather than academic feminists.

I would vote for a female Prime Minister (can't vote for a President) -- provided that her character, abilities, and policies were suitable to the task (same standards I apply to voting for male politicians.) I happen to be a man.
