Bob Schieffer: Don't Blame Media for Iraq Failures

CBS "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer lashed out at the U.S. military on Sunday, saying top generals need to "stop blaming the media" for negative coverage of the Iraq war.

Closing his broadcast Sunday with a commentary on reports that Iraq has descended into civil war, Schieffer urged: "What must stop is the ongoing government effort to sugar coat [the lack of progress in Iraq] - trying to blame it on the media or saying it's all going very, very well - as our top general Peter Pace did last week."

Appearing on "Meet the Press" last Sunday, Gen. Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the reason the public's support for the war seems to be ebbing is because the media is selectively reporting the negative news.

"What they’re seeing is the same bomb going off every 15 minutes on television, as opposed to having an opportunity to see all of what’s happening in Iraq," Pace complained. "I believe that the American people who are able to see all that is happening in Iraq would understand much better that progress is being made."

But Schieffer said that kind of talk was not productive

"The Iraqis hear that and take it to mean we believe their excuses and they'll continue to dawdle," he lamented.

The only thing Vietnam and Iraq have in common is a press corps that wants nothing more than our side to lose.

Looks like Bob Schieffer is ready to take the Dan Rather off-ramp to retirement.

Another MSM liberal long overdue for the barn...

The military has been insensitive in its characterization of the media. I suggest that they start calling our little friends the Tokyo Rose Media. How's that for nuanced???

BTW folks, we're 12 days into the month and the US casualty ratio in Iraq is currently < 1.0 per day. There has never been a < 1.0/day month for an entire month since the war started. Don't want to jinx this, but it is possible that if this holds up the rest of this month and maintains, it will likely emerge as obvious progress whether the MSM likes it or not.

You know, when I have boots on the ground telling me that they turn on CNN or FOXNews and the bad stuff they are reporting as happening never happened or things that did happen didn't happen half as bad as they report. I tend to blame the media. Who else is to blame?

Don't blame the MSM. After all they did everything they could to put on in the lost column.

Exactly. The old bass turds like Commie Bob here turn the American people against the military and they the pigs don't want to take credit for it. Schieffer is a real dirtbag.

Looks like Schieffer is hitting the sauce before noon.

But that is exactly what the media will do...ignore the progress and move on to some other statistic they can use to demonstrate that the war is going badly.

The MSM has done this from day one. When we took an operational pause--it was a quagmire even though it was only to allow our supply lines to catch up to our troops.

The fact that we established control over the 4th largest army in the world in less than 2 weeks with a lowest casualties of any war in history is ignored.

Ah, partisan Bobby boy does the old switcharoo. The media is not being blamed for Iraq failures. The media is being blamed for inaccurate, incomplete and unbalanced reporting. Half truths are whole lies, especially when told with the intent to mislead as part of a partisan effort to persuade and move the public in one particular partisan political direction.

Then there is the media's total disregard for the safety and reputation of the armed forces. They spit in the faces of those who protect their sorry selves, all for the hope of political aid to their beloved liberals. In the media, truth bows to the liberal agenda.
