Closing down mosques would be counter-productive. How can you know the enemy, if there, if you don't mix and mingle? Unhappily, Islam if it ever was the religion of peace, has been hijacked by monsters with influence far beyond their actual numbers. What to do when you don't have one nation to fight with an army in uniform. Jihad is fostered by evil, brainwashing tyrants who don't care how many people they kill as long as Islam becomes paramount. It's a tough question, especially in a free society. Although it's not PC to say so, some Japanese in interment camps were actually spies or made to spy for the enemy because of threats to family and friends back in Japan. The same is undoubtedly true today, with Muslims under threat, forced to spy or funnel money, etc.. On the other hand, some are true believers who can't wait to see the Great Satan perish.

Put it this way: For generations, the US wouldn't elect a Catholic President because they feared the Pope's control. And there was a long history of anti-Catholicism in the US. Finally, in '60, Kennedy was elected and that put that fear more or less to rest. However, remember the questions put to Kerry in '04. (He's Catholic.) How dare the bishops tell him he couldn't take communion because he supported abortion rights! Kerry, like Kennedy before him, vowed he was his own man. His religious views were private and wouldn't affect him as President. The same sort of thing came up during Supreme Court hearings, and if Mitt Romney runs for President, he'll face Mormon-bashing.

We might like to think Islam isn't hellbent on taking over the world, but wishful thinking will kill you, Jihad is a fact, and Baptists aren't running around beheading people. If we're hit badly again, and I don't see how we can prevent every attack, Islam will have to answer for it. This is why it's so important for moderate Muslims to speak out.

I agree that its important but you know there is an incredible double standard taking place. Alot of americans say do something. But when moderate Muslims bravely defy this thugs and get blown up by extremist that is classifyed not as not doing something but in fact is twisted to use agaisnt them. I see this repeatly in the Mid East and the Arab world. Those folks are heros but too often esp on FR their deaths are made mockeries.
