A man who was released from jail so that he could donate a kidney to his ailing son was being sought in Mexico yesterday after he went on the run before the organ could be removed.
Byron Perkins from Kentucky was awaiting sentencing for drugs and firearms offences and facing a minimum 25 years in prison. But he was allowed out after tearfully convincing officials that he wanted to help his son, Destin, 15, who has dialysis twice a week.
Perkins was not wearing an electronic ankle bracelet because doctors told the judge who approved his release it would interfere with medical tests. "He was crying, he was just literally begging the judge," a police spokeswoman told reporters.
"He told the judge, 'My son is going to die if I don't give him this kidney. He's so sick right now'."
Perkins went for hospital tests but vanished before his kidney could be removed. He had been freed on an unsecured bond of $10,000 (£5,800), which did not require him to put up any cash, prompting criticisms that local law enforcement authorities had been lax.
Kentucky investigators said yesterday they had a "solid lead" in the case after an American couple holidaying in a Mexican fishing village flew back to an airport in Arizona and saw a report about Perkins on CNN.

Oops.
No Father of the Year award for you, buster!
I saw this on tv the other night. His son looked so depressed. How could a father do this to his child?
I say we take one kidney for the son.
And the other kidney just for spite.
Yeah, kids are the ones who really suffer from a bad parent. This poor kid has been through more than his share of suffering.
He should have been taken to the hospital as a prisoner.
"Everyday my papa would work
To try to make ends meet
To see that we would eat
Keep those shoes upon my feet
Every night my papa would take me
And tuck me in my bed
Kiss me on my head
After all my prayers were said
And there were years
Of sadness and of tears
Through it all
Together we were strong
We were strong
Times were rough
But Papa he was tough
Mama stood beside him all along"
Thanks! That's great information.
With all those tattoos, and jail time, im not sure hes not walking arounf with hepatitis or Aids anyway... the kidneysmay be no use to the boy.
The worst part is that he probably can't be punished for anything more than making a run for it.
Well if he's already facing a 25 year minimum sentnece, I don't know what more we could do to him, unless he kills someone.
Unfortunately, you make a good point.
The absolute cruelty of this man's actions blows my mind.
Most of us would do anything for our kids and grandkids.
He's pure evil !
I'm with you. BOTH kidneys should be removed the moment he's found, one for his son, one for someone else.
Come to think of it, his son could maybe use both kidneys.
I'm thinking that we find him - take his kidney - fly it to his son who is waiting for it - then leave him in Mexico with a single kidney and a bounty on his head. If there were a way to put the other kidney on ice and save it for the kid, I would advocate taking them both up front.
I think there are other family members they are testing. The boy will probably get another kidney but how can you recover emotionally from the actions of a father like this though? That's going to take some time. I saw the guys mom. She seemed very caring so maybe he can't be all bad and will have a change of heart. For the young boys sake, I hope so. I saw that the doctor had said that he was just going to get dialysis right now because of his emotional state.
