Probably. If memory serves me, isn't that's the only state George McGovern won when he ran...?

South Dakota is one of the most dependably Republican states in Presidential elections. Since statehood, the Democrats carried it only in 1896 (by a razorthin margin), in 1932 and 1936, and in 1964. When a Democrat from South Dakota was the nominee for President in 1972 (McGovern) he didn't carry his home state.

If Daschle's purpose is to get Hillary to consider him as her running mate, he's wasting his time...she's more likely to pick someone who might help carry a close state or appeal to a certain segment of the population.
