We know it to be a myth that the crusaders targeted the Jewish community in Jerusalem.

How is a Frankish man-at-arms to know Jew from Muslim?

Some of our men (and this was more merciful) cut off the heads of their enemies; others shot them with arrows, so that they fell from the towers; others tortured them longer by casting them into the flames. Piles of heads, hands, and feet were to be seen in the streets of the city. It was necessary to pick one's way over the bodies of men and horses. But these were small matters compared to what happened at the Temple of Solomon, a place where religious services are ordinarily chanted. What happened there? If I tell the truth, it will exceed your powers of belief. So let it suffice to say this much, at least, that in the Temple and porch of Solomon, men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins. Indeed, it was a just and splendid judgment of God that this place should be filled with the blood of the unbelievers, since it had suffered so long from their blasphemies. The city was filled with corpses and blood.

Sounds like they went medieval on them.

The Crusades did nothing to damage Islam. The Mongols did a lot and nearly finished it off. Yet there is no interest in the Mongol campaign.

In terms of eleventh-century behaviour in war, the massacre at Jerusalem was not unusual.

The Mongols did not use horseshoes, and the rocky terrain of Syria reportedly injured the Mongol horses' hooves to the extent that they were unable to fight effectively. Additionally, the Mamluks realised that grasslands were needed to pasture the Mongols' horses. Therefore, the Mamluks often burned grasslands in Syria in their wake, to prevent the Mongol horses from grazing.

The Mongols were headed toward Europe through Turkey, but the Turks won the final battle as much by luck and circumstance as anything. Europe was wide open had the Mongols got past Turkey.

During his intifada I recall seeing that man of peace, Yasir Arafat, remember him?, pounding on a table, yelling and spitting on himself and everyone around him like a madman. That 7-day beard he always had (I guess nobody would tell him; shave Yasir, shave) and that towel on his head that he always brought to a point. He shouted over and over jihad jihad jihad jihad jihad jihad jihad jihad jihad.......
All I could think of was

CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE CRUSADE !

Only the death of Emperor Ogadai . . . saved Europe from total conquest.

Yes, the fact Jews were then living in 'relative' peace within moslem communities" is not surprising.

" According to surviving records, Jews helped the Arabs in many places. From Syria to Spain, they opened city gates to the besieging armies; and in Spain, they often garrisoned the captured cities to enable the Muslims to sweep on to further conquests....
Jews, accustomed to adversity, found their change of masters an improvement. They survived the hardship brought about by the conquest and were eventually able to participate in the creation of the new Arabic civilisation that followed."

Yes I found it a very interesting subject (with modern consequences) that suffers from a dearth of scholarship. Most articles on the subject I've read are more efforts at polemics than efforts at relating history.

" I suspect that they will keep up the ROP nonsense until there is another massive attack or something else that makes it patently ridiculous."

I suspect they will keep up the ROP nonsense through another massive attack, or a hundred, or a hundred thousand massive attacks.

The system is structurally incapable of allowing real leaders to rise to the top.

untold numbers of Christians converted to Islam simply to save their lives.

The FACT is that most of the present-day Egyptians, Syrians, Libyans, Lebanese and even those who call themselves Turks today are descendents of Christians who were forcibly converted. Ditto for Pakiland, they are descendents of forcibily converted Hindus

They were, after all, failures from a Western standpoint.

Key point -- we failed to keep the Holy Lands Christian, we failed to save our Christian brethern in Egypt, North Africa, Syria, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Yemen and Iraq. And look at what's happened now? The descendents of those Christians now are cultists and fight us and bomb us. Our case is similar to what God predicted would happen to the Israelites if they didn't destroy the Canaanites when they had the chance....

The only Crusade that was successful was the Spanish crusade. However, to be honest, I have NO IDEA why the Greeks and Eastern Europeans managed to retain their religion when many of the Middle Eastern Christians lost theirs (could be the duration of time as the Greeks were only under the Ottomans for 400 years and even then some did convert -- I'd say many of the present day Turks have Greek blood in them, The Albanians were Christians before the Turks too)
