On the local news tonight one of his former players said that he talked to Boom Boom just a couple of days ago and he was really looking forward to going up to Montreal.
rest his soul ,...
we were a hockey household [growing up in the 1960's]
perhaps Mr. Doucet will sing him Oh Canada [we loved his voice]
Growing up in Detroit, every Saturday night during hockey season we'd watch Hockey Night in Canada. I can still remember always hearing the announcer..."Geoffrion to Cournoyer! Now back to Geoffrion! HE SHOOTS! HE SCORES!!!!"
We got our first TV set in 1956. There were only two channels available and one was Canadian. Good thing my dad liked hockey. "Boom-boom" Geoffrion was a familiar name. RIP
Boom Boom was in some of the Lite Beer commercials. I remember the one when he was at the bar and said, "check please'" and was knocked over with a hockey check.
bye-bye Boom-Boom ping.
A sad day. Just heard while watching the Blue jackets game.
Oops. That would be Blue Jackets...
That announcer was Danny Gallivan, I think. Yah, there was usually a 'he scores' after 'he shoots' with those guys.
Thoughts and prayers sent. :-(
Boom Boom was a fixture in Atlanta during the 70's. So sad that he died. I won't make any snide comments about the sport in his honor.
wheew, for a second I thought it was a mistype and Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon died...
RIP, Boom Boom.
Went to quite a few Black Hawk games in the 60's (in the wonderful Chicago Stadium) and got to see many of these old greats play. I had the privilege of meeting Chico Maki outside Washington National one day, and we shared a terrific memory of Bobby Hull and Gump Worsley.
"Yah, there was usually a 'he scores' after 'he shoots' with those guys."
Followed within minutes by another anouncer cutting in with "Esso is Best!"
That's the same way his teammate, Jacques Plante died. He was unbelieveable. RIP Boom-Boom
A good guy who had a good life. He battled cancer for years but was lucid right up until the last couple of days.
He was in on what might be the greatest skill play in the history of hockey!!! I think it was the 1958 Stanley Cup against the Bruins.
Jean Beliveau was taking a faceoff to the opposing goalie's right. Geoffrion was on the right wing. Beliveau chopped down on the puck when the ref dropped it and got a nine-iron effect. The puck popped up mid-chest-high, crossing in front of Geoffrion who stuck his stick out and redirected the puck into the net.
You could do this a thousand times and it wouldn't work. It worked because it was Beliveau and Geoffrion.
