MCCAIN IN REPUBLICAN STRAW POLL EMBARRASSMENT
Sat Mar 11 2006 12:50:33 ET
Facing a loss at a 2008 straw poll event this weekend, Senator John McCain of Arizona told his supporters to write in President Bush [?] as a sign of support, leaving many sputtering.
"For the next three years, with our country at war, he's our president and the only one who needs our support," McCain told nearly 2,000 party activists from 26 states gathered in Memphis.
McCain, realizing the national political media had descended on the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, moved to discredited the straw poll by asking delegates to vote for Bush, insiders claim.
Instead of stopping the momentum of Majority Leader Bill Frist - widely anticipated to win the straw poll - the move seems to exposed the McCain camp's insincerity about their position with the base.
One activist said, "McCain voted against all the Bush tax cuts... maybe he should have voted for the president then, instead of waiting for political stunt to try and distract."
Developing...
Smart move
Bullseye.
Like we don't already know what motivates John McCain to say or do anything.
I hate supporting McCain, but the truth is one can support the presidnet as our leader and in the war without agreeing with his spending/taxing policies.

"Frist Plays the Child in Memphis
Posted by H-Bomb on Saturday, 11 March 2006 (06:13:43) EST
My Inbox was full this morning with e-mails from friends and readers in Memphis. Apparently, the write in Bush campaign swept through the conference over the last 24-hours.
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour endorsed the idea in his speech during his hospitality party (Barbours parties are legendary in GOP circles, by the way.) And, I am told, Sen. Trent Lott and Sen. Lindsey Graham will also endorse the write in Bush movement this morning.
Sen. Bill Frist, unfortunately, is playing the child. His staffers are scampering around the conference bad-mouthing John McCain; exactly the type of Republican in-fighting the write in Bush movement was intended to scuttle. Apparently, Sen. Frist spent a lot of time and money dialing up this straw poll (which is being held in his home state) as a way to kick start his so-far-not-so-serious presidential campaign (one wonders why he cant run the Senate with such fastidiousness.)
But why is Frist lashing out at McCain? I first reported this story based on information I received from conferees who were not McCain partisans almost 12-hours before Sen. McCain endorsed the measure. And why not lash out at Gov. Barbour and Sen. Graham, both of whom are mentioned as presidential aspirants?
No matter. The movement has gripped Memphis. And it appears the only thing holding the Southern Republican Leadership Conference back from a powerful vote of confidence in President George W. Bush is Sen. Bill Frists petty ambitions. "

We need to remember that when he goes to Iowa and NH. I wonder if the reporters will ask him if it's ok to campaign so early while we're at war...Nevermind they won't.
LOL!!! mcdipsh*t, time to pay the piper
Only thing he could do.
McCain knew he couldn't win which would have been the really big embarrassment, so he had his supporters write in Bush's name.
dont forget about CFR.....
Of course. .....Joe Lieberman is a prime example. But he's a Democrat. McCain doesn't belong in the Republican party, and if Republican voters have any sense whatsoever they'll keep him as far away from the Oval Office as possible.
Why don't you run in your own party!
Sounds like you drank the McCain kool-aid.
I guess the 3 losers banded together to give a no confidence vote in all the runners--that's they way I see it. BTW: I don't want Frist as the nominee either. If I had to pick I'd go with Allen, but still I'm waiting for a shining star to emerge. So far they all look like a bunch of Bob Doles.
oops.. Make that a back-stabbing conniving traitorous pig.
(no offense meant to pigs)
Another think to remember is at least Barbour supports the President on most things; where as McCain, has opposed him on most big issues.
He blew it in 2000...and his egotemperdumbnuts will
be a red flag when the serious voters scrutinize the field in
2007...Jake
More likely he wanted to avoid embarrassment by showing how poorly he'd actually do in such a poll
McCain is right to do this:
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour endorsed the idea in his speech during his hospitality party (Barbours parties are legendary in GOP circles, by the way.) And, I am told, Sen. Trent Lott and Sen. Lindsey Graham will also endorse the write in Bush movement this morning.
