Do you contend that a small stevedoring firm is capable of taking over port operations?

We will see.

the Dubai firm that is operating under a DOD contract servicing US Navy ships at 60 ports..

BTW, the Navy does the security checks for that.

What an asinine comment.

There was a huge outcry at the time, and the inital deal was squelched. It would be interesting to see just when they snuck in the back door, and who was or is accountable for this, which could reasonably be described as a breach of the public trust.

COSCO'S lease on the US Naval Base at Long Beach was invalidated by the Congress -- good thing, since they were involved in arms smuggling and the base was reportedly to be used for espionage purposes. When an area was vacated at the Port of Long Beach at a later date, COSCO were able to move in.

COSCO didn't have to sneak in order to get these goodies from Clinton---

  1. COSCO got guarantees for loans, from Clinton, for ships to be built in Mobile Alabama
  2. The Clinton Administration allowed COSCO's ships access to our most sensitive ports with one day's notice rather than the usual four

As Johnny Chung said: 'I see the White House is like a subway: You have to put in coins to open the gates,'

A young woman who is working for a real estate development corp that is doing business with Dubai, told me that Dubai was going to pull out of the port deal and turn it over to a US company which is actually controlled by Dubai. Maybe this is it.

Miami stevedores merge , World Maritime News - 19 June, 1998
Eller & Co. Inc. and International Terminal Operating Co. Inc. are merging their stevedoring subsidiaries at the Port of Miami, it was announced 11 June. Continental Stevedoring and Terminals Inc. and ITO Corp. will form Eller-ITO Stevedoring Co. L.L.C.

To enable the merger, Eller & Co. bought Neal Harrington's 50 percent stake in Continental Stevedoring and Terminals to become the sole owner.

Harrington was one of three men charged 3 June in a 10-count U.S. government indictment with stealing U.S.$1.3 million from the Port of Miami to spend on personal products and services. They were also charged with using the stolen money to donate U.S.$196,824 to the Democratic National Committee in March 1994.

Harrington, a director at the stevedore, was charged with embezzlement and theft. Eller & Co. said that the purchase and merger were planned before Harrington was charged.

Factually correct, think about it. It's an old business saying that while one sells because they maybe making money they're selling because they're making "More" money.

Heaven's sake, I screwed all that saying up but I think you get the jest. They're selling because they're making "more" money and an American company just could compete.

In the long term, I'd make a lot more money by keeping my business running. Knowing that, I have considered selling just to get rid of the headache. Anyone who has ever put up with the BS of running a company in this country knows exactly what I mean. Sometimes, the money just doesn't make up for the hassle. If I had to deal with unionized employees, I'd have slit my throat a long time ago.

Sorry I couldn't get back to the post yesterday, I was kind of rushing when I posted my yip yap yesterday. The saying is meant to indicate that there has to be another reason for selling than when making money. If there is money being made but everyday the owner goes home with a headache then decides to sell, a normal person doesn't sell because the money but because the headaches. My statement was to indicate to another poster that this is a free market and regardless if one company is an American company there is no obligation to sell to them but it just got way off beat.
