Cupcakes, Bake Sales May Be Banned At School

POSTED: 11:44 am EST March 10, 2006

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Cupcakes for kids' birthdays could become a thing of the past in Santa Clara, Calif.

School district officials are considering a 24-7 ban on all junk food.

That would mean no more PTA bake sales or classroom birthday parties with cake and ice cream. District officials said the proposal is prompted by the rise in fat kids.

Students would still be able to bring junk food from home as part of their lunches, but wouldn't be allowed to share it.

The school board heard from parents Thursday night who are opposed to the junk food prohibition. The board plans a decision on the issue by the end of the school year.

I wish these "administrators" were half as concerned about the academic performance of the children entrusted to them.

This can't be allowed to stand.

Freakin' nannies make me want to kick somebody's ass.

WTF?

Does this mean if Jimmy gives Suzy one of his Dolly Madison Zingers, he could face disciplinary action - or at the worst, social ostracization from the lunchroom staff?

Gawd...

Hey! Whatever your views on sharing junk food, this dovetails nicely with TROP "no birthday parties" rule.

Yeah. Vegetables during the day that turn into fruits at night.

"Now children, it's Timmy's birthday today and he is going to pass out his Fat-Free Rice Cake treats. I want you to all remain seated and wait your turn. If any of you come running up here before it's your turn you will be punished by having to eat an unhealthy cookie."

No surprise. Northeast ISD here in San Antonio has long banned both birthday party cupcakes and Halloween.

We went that route as well. Still glad they're grown. And good for you for making the sacrifices you have to make to do what's best for your kids. So many parents think it'll be ok......

It's really not that much of a sacrifice. I only wish more parents knew that.

My wife is a grad student and is working (as an intern). We would have had to have half-day daycare for our youngest and afterschool care for our oldest. We checked the daycare costs and compared them to Catholic school tuition -- only about a $100 difference each month.

EVERYTHING weird has always come out of CA and spread across the country for all to follow. Hence the reference to "nuts and fruits" of CA.

Me, too. The principal's only request treat-wise is that nothing with blue frosting is given to him.
