"I fail to see how any of this relates to geography."
It is strange to me that Geography is a high school elective, or required course.
When I was in public school, back in the 50s, geography was taught in Elementary school. I can still see the textbook in my mind.
It was the start of my learning about the world, prior to my becoming a ham radio operator and contacting someone in every country of the world.

Same here. We studied real geography, too. I can still see the travel posters on the wall for Brazil and remember the project on Maine! That was either second or third grade during the 60's.
