I vote for Walmart. We'd see efficiency not seen before in port operations and it'd be good for WalMart to have huge distribution centers right in the heart of each port reducing the need for extra transport costs.
Well, all I know is that no US firm wanted to touch it back when the bids were let. Unless something's changed to make the idea more palatable, I can't see a US firm doing now, not for long anyway.
Bingo~!
Mind your logic and p's and q's.
If this what I'm thinking of, it's brilliant. DPW sells their interest in the American Terminals for cash and stock. I will bet they've just become a major investor in a US company.
If red tennis balls are spherical, does that mean all spherical objects are red tennis balls?
This is the kind of logic you would have learned had you paid attention in school. I have many Islamic friends who deplore terrorism. Why don't you meet a few... oh, wait, they're not white southern Christian males... never mind.
I hope Commander, Fifth Fleet has some suitably sailor-like language for expressing his opinion of Congress, now that his ships have to go to Diego Garcia or Guam for maintenance and R&R.
Will Rogers
I will bet they just became a major shareholder in a US Company.
Good one.
There was no "bid letting." Public companies are always availble for takeover. P&O was a publicly traded company.
Unless something's changed to make the idea more palatable, I can't see a US firm doing now, not for long anyway.
DPW may create a subsidiary that is wholly US-owned. Same people, different legal and tax structure.
I haven't heard or seen anything OFFICIAL saying the UAE is seeking revenge for the American's concerns. I haven't even seen that they're SELLING the American port business, only transferring the operations.
Does anyone have a link? Sounds like they though this was a good solution for them and us and they didn't want to go through the 45 day grilling from Congress.
Good. Don't let the door hit you in the turban on your way out.
You're right - just look at those Muslims they arrested that carried out the church burnings - oops, wait, those were white guys so it was criminal, not terrorist. I could have only imagined the freeper feeding frenzy about terrorism that would have commenced had they been Arab and/or Muslim.
Do you propose that all Muslims are basically terrorists? Labelling them so pretty much says we have to eliminate about a sixth of the world's population for us to be safe if we all lump them into the same group.
And you pinged me to that, why...?
In fairness to Dubai, I think the public perception of security concerns with Dubai is incorrect, and I hope the UAE continues to be a strong ally and a friend of the US.
Actually, right now there are so many conflicting stories coming out I'm not sure what to think - are they just assigning this one contract to an American company, or are they breaking off all deals with us? Getting good information has been one of the problems from the start.
Hmmm, Why do I see some old Geezer in a rowboat saying "Welcome to Boston Harbor" at the passing ships?
Or they saw the 62-2 vote yesterday and realized that even with the 45 day review they wouldn't win over Congress.
I wasn't happy about the sale of the ports, but I believe that the way this was handled from beginning to end will cause us to lose far more security than we gain.
The only possible positive is that XXX-42's consulting check might bounce now.
This out to be interesting. Which US firm is interested in running these terminals? US companies have been moving out of this business for years. My prediction is a joint US/European corporate venture will take up the deal
