Race Menu for the weekend series

Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Just a few miles north of "The Strip," Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits like a diamond in the desert. One of the most complete racing complexes in the

world, its 1,600 acres include road courses, a three-eighths mile oval, a dirt track and a state-of-the-art drag racing facility.

At its heart, however, is the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway, home for the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

Construction of the $200 million complex began in 1995

Nearly 2,000 tons of concrete were originally used to build more than 100,000 seats. Shortly after Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track in 1998, it

announced plans to add 22,000 seats in the Dale Earnhardt Tower overlooking the frontstretch.

Construction of the Richard Petty Terrace in Turn 1 was completed in 2006, allowing fans a shot at 14,000 additional tickets and pushing the trackýs

seating capacity to nearly 150,000.

The first NASCAR race held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was a Busch Series event in 1996. Two years later, the Cup series made its first visit with Mark

Martin picking up the victory.

Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth have both won two Cup races there. Jeff Gordon, Sterling Marlin and Jimmie Johnson also have visited Victory Lane at the

1.5-mile track.

ROCKETMAN

NASCAR driver helps contain fire at eatery

Tuesday, March 7, 2006 8:12 AM EST

Joshua Harris, Local News Editor, jharris@newstopic.net

A NASCAR driver with a Leatherman helped control a fire that threatened to engulf Sledgehammer Charlie's in downtown Lenoir Monday afternoon.

Chris Barlowe and Jeffrey Rocks with Gateway Grading were having lunch with NASCAR driver Ryan Newman at Sledgehammer Charlie's discussing a business venture, according to Barlowe and Rocks, when the fire started.

“Our lunch had just arrived when the restaurant filled with smoke,” Rocks said.

Barlowe, who used to work with Lenoir Fire Department, asked where the roof access was, and Barlowe, Rocks and Newman climbed up to the roof. Once on top, they saw a vent system cover.

If not for Newman's Leatherman, a knife-like tool, the men still may have been trying to get to the fire when Lenoir arrived. However, Barlowe said Newman used the Leatherman to remove the bolts to the ventilator cover while he used a fire extinguisher on the flames.

“Once they got the top off, Ryan and Chris expended every fire extinguisher (they had),” Rocks said. “Instead of running away (Newman) ran to the fire.”

“Ryan saved the day,” Barlowe said.

Fire Chief Ken Briscoe said he saw Barlowe on the roof, but he didn't know a NASCAR driver was working reserves for the department as well.

“When (Barlowe) came down he was telling me he and this other guy took fire extinguishers to knock this fire down,” Briscoe said. “I thanked him and said ya'll did a great job.”

Then Barlowe told the chief he may want to thank the man that helped him.

“I walked over there and said, ‘Gosh! Ryan Newman,'” Briscoe said. “He said, ‘Yeah.'”

Briscoe said he thanked Newman again for helping knock the fire down until Lenoir's firefighters arrived on the scene, and Newman told him not to worry about it.

Getting ready to head out to the track for some practice and qualifying.

Local weather forecast is less than desirable - wind chill of 37 right now, calling for am thunderstorms. Not good for tomorrow - rain most of the day, winds to 25 mph and cold. Sunday looks better - no rain but still cold and windy.

Who cares, Nascar is in town!

The boy had his picture taken with Reed Sorensen last night, he was excited about that. I felt sorry for Reed - cold, windy and he is in a tee shirt. Nice guy.
