Americans operate American ports. This deal has nothing to do with port operation. It has to do with the operation of a few terminals within ports, but was completely misconstrued with such a holler that very few people have any idea what is going on, and the deal itself isn't even being discussed - just some hypothetical deal that no one is trying to do.
In Houston, for example, there are more than 150 terminals. Confusing the two is at best hysterical hyperbole.
P&O leases space at one Houston terminal for container repair and container storage, and provides queueing and stevedore services at another. It does not own either terminal, and DP World won't either (though as I understand,, it does own some terminals in other ports).
The stevedore service is manned by U.S. Union Longshoremen, and the cargoes are sent where U.S. customs specifies. They are not allowed to be opened until delivered to the customer except by U.S. Customs.
Now...does that sound even remotely like the conversation being screamed around the country?
And because of their opeeration of "terminals", they will have access to security plans at the ports where their terminals are. Thats unacceptable.
Just as calling those who oppose it "racist" as the administration has done.
If any racism is involved it is UAE who does not recognize Israel's right to exist
and partipates in an ongoing boycott of Israel.
Congress will soon pass a law that sinks this bad deal.
