The Alabama State Legislature approved a bill for MMI to be merged into the Alabama post-secondary education system. The MMI Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept this offer on Tuesday, March 7, effective June 1, 2006.

The immediate effect of this merger will be the added financial support of the state along with 375 additional college scholarships (state cadetships).

The Preparatory school will be financially supported by the state for up to 3 years. During this 3 year period, which begins on June 1, 2006, MMI will not be permitted to enroll any new preparatory students.

MMI becomes MMI, the military college of Alabama. My alma matter taken over by the state... I don't know if that is the best solution, but that is no longer an issue I suppose now that it is done. Well, it will be better funded, and it is a source of officers for the military, and will be more so with increased scholarships.

Is the plan to turn MMI into a 4-year military college ala VMI and The Citadel? The Commonwealth has run VMI reasonably well since 1839 and South Carolina has done pretty well with The Citadel since 1842. We're not such bad company. VMI'70

Well, it had always been a private institution. They have had financial difficulties though, and when SACS was doing their reaccredidation visits recently, they (MMI) were told that if the financial problems didn't get fixed then they could risk losing accreditation.

As far as the number of officers is concerned, they were commissioning between 45 to 60 officers every year in their ROTC program (one of the largest in the nation)-most of them only there through ROTC scholarships. Now, there is the potential for more through the ROTC and their service academy preparation program.

My old Alma Mater, class of '73. I guess this means the college program won't be referred to as "post-graduate high school" anymore...
