Penalties range from other-than-honorable discharges to death for desertion during wartime. Few are court-martialed.
Gee, I wonder when the last death penalty was imposed causing them to feel the need to include it?

There were 21,049 soldiers sentenced for desertion during WWII, with 49 of them receiving death sentences. However, only one death sentence was carried out - Edward Donald Slovik.

"Gee, I wonder when the last death penalty was imposed causing them to feel the need to include it?" If I remember correctly I saw a film staring Martin Sheen called Private Slovik (sp?) and I believe it was a docudrama stating that he was the last US soldier shot for desertion, the show was set during WWII.

Gee, I wonder when the last death penalty was imposed causing them to feel the need to include it? For dereliction of duty I think the last US solder was put to death in WWII. He fell asleep on guard duty while protecting the Eisenhower command.
