There are certain kids who will having an easy time learning to read (and will come to it early) no matter what method is used to teach them. One of my three children falls into this category. As much as I would like to take credit as a homeschooling mom for her abilities, it doesn't really have very much to do with me. The same may be true for your child; it may not say much for educational fads and methods today.
I'm with you...
Both my kids were readers in Kindergarten. My oldest, now 2nd grade, is working fractions.
It's all relative to the school districts. That's why I sought out the BEST schools in the area and moved there!

Well, given your tag line, I'll take a wild guess that you are male. If your five year old is female, that would be one explanation. Girls tend to be ready to learn to read before boys.
I was reading at 4; I was an exception. So is your little one. I've met high schoolers who have a hard time reading, and can't make a thoughtful and complete sentence.
