So would you support the integration of Taiwan into the mainland PRC even as it remains Communist?
No.. That's not going to happen, unless the Communists are looking forward to 50+ years of guerilla warfare in Taiwan. Most people just want status quo. Status quo has lasted 25 years now, another 25 years and hopefully China will become a freer place (more grassroots democracy, more rule of law, more non-Communists in positions of power). If not, then we can proceed as things develop. There will be no reunification under the present terms. If China invades without provocation, then it will be suicide on their part, and they will bear a long, violent animosity towards them by the people in Taiwan. It has the potential to collapse the Chinese communist government if they invaded.

I do agree with you that Taiwan shold not declare independence and keep the status quo. But I do disagree with you on Taiwanese resolve against military action from the mainland. If for whatever reason, Chen declares independence and CCP attacks, i think Taiwan will fall VERY quickly. It has not had any type of war in the last 40 years. China doesn't have to invade to get Taiwan back on the negotiation table -- those 700 missiles aimed at Tsinchu industrial park would be enough.
