The official U.S. decision is that the Israelis mistakenly did not identify the USS Liberty as an American ship. I notice that your citation claims even that the Court's records were fraudulently changed.
So you believe that there was a tremendous conspiracy to hide the truth, a conspiracy that has lasted through 7 Presidential Administrations. You must not admire the U.S. very much, to believe that.

The short answer is yes. It has nothing to do with admiring the US. It is a matter of political expediency. For a number of reasons, there is no desire to embarrass Israel over this incident. The cover-up began almost immediately. The firsthand accounts of the USS Liberty survivors plus the comments from US officials including the Secretary of State and the head of the CIA make it painfully obvious that this was a deliberate attack.
As retired USG employee with over 36 years of service, there are plenty of things that are withheld from the American public, including information that is kept quiet for reasons of diplomacy and political pressure.
