Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Bakersfield), one of the most influential members of the California delegation in Congress, is holding a news conference Monday to announce whether he will run for reelection this year amid predictions the 14-term congressman will retire.

Speculation is widespread that Thomas may leave Congress because, under House rules setting term limits for committee chairmen, this year is the last he can serve as head of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't be sorry to see Thomas go. His district will definitely elect another Republican, preferably a conservative.

Adios to Thomas, King of Pork. Hopefully voters will be smart enough to not elect his heir apparent.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to be 16 years old and going to the Thomas house to take his daughter out?
{don`t know if he even has kids)

If he does retire it will likely remain Republican. The only thing to worry about is if that Asburn vs. McCathey Primany will likely leave tons of blood on the floor, and if Dean run as the Dem he can sneak in then.

The most mentioned possible successor to Thomas is GOP state Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy.

As a former Californian, I'm pissed off at how Van Tran felt compelled to drop out of the state Senate race in northern Orange County. I find it surprising that the state GOP is supporting RINO state Assemblywoman Lynn Daucher.

Of course he's going to retire. No more kickbacks. Good riddance.

See ya'!

I'm indifferent. There's no way it'll elect a D, and I have no particular love for Thomas, so who cares?

I agree. His district is among the most Republican in the nation, and it's time it sent a pro-lifer to Congress; remember, Thomas isn't just the king of pork, he's also pro-abortion.

As I said, hopefully voters are smart enough not to vote for more of the same (i.e. McCarthy).
