we have similar deposits, but they are even more difficult and expensive to extract than the Albertan deposits as ours are mostly in the form of Oil Shale.

Extremely messy stuff to work with and extremely expensive to extract.

Actually, silly eco regs and restrictions on land use have much more to do with it than any comparative advantage to Canada in the matter. Just like we don't develop Alaskan oil, not because it isn't economic ut because green commies have a headlock on the future of capitalism, and nobody has the balls to take them on.
