WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Defense Department inspector general has directed the Army to open a criminal investigation into the death of former NFL star Pat Tillman, CNN learned on Saturday.

Tillman was killed on April 22, 2004, during a ground convoy assault not far from Khowst, Afghanistan, near the eastern border with Pakistan. Two other coalition soldiers were wounded in the ambush and an Afghan militia force soldier was killed.

The Army in May of 2004 determined that Tillman, 27, was probably killed by gunfire from his own unit during the intense firefight.

What is it with the military persecuting their own troops?

i had a buddy who told me this may have been a "jealousy" situation, but I could scarcely believe such a thing...plus the guy who told me this is prone to conspiracy theories..FWIW

Horrible if true...

What a loss to our country for a guy like that to die so young...

"What a loss to our country for a guy like that to die so young..."

So true. And if this charge has an ounce of validity it needs to be pressed with all haste and resource.

Oh man.

I hate to even hear this. Awful for the family if true.

This is the kind of thing that really hurts morale in the military.

Where's that?

The end of neo-conservative denial, innocence and naivete for one.

I hope this doesn't turn into a media circus but no doubt it will. This will really drag further on the moral of the war effort and those supporting the troops from the home front.

How can a soldier possibly killing another out of jealousy, have implications for the broader war? I do not understand your mentality.

This is the kind of thing that really hurts morale in the military.

I think shooting your own fellow soldiers does more to hurt morale than investigating how it happened. I hope they get to the bottom of this.

I had heard something similar to this a few weeks ago but hoped it wasn't true.

The death of Pat Tillman was a terrible loss for this country.

Of course it does- I am refering to the overall effect on soldiers. If this is true- it has far-reaching consequences- beyond the normal scope of a criminal investigation in the civilian world.

I was not articulate.
