MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- The Navy is encouraging Sailors and their families to take part in the 2006 election season with help from the Navy Voting Assistance Program.
The program and its Navy Voting Assistance officers can assist with the process of absentee voting in time for the start of this year’s election season, which begins March 7.
“The Navy Voting Assistance Program is here to assist every Sailor who is eligible to vote,” said Lt. Dave Truman, Navy Voting Assistance Program manager, Commander, Navy Installations Command, Millington Detachment. “Sailors can still vote in their state primary through the process of absentee voting, even though they may not physically be in the state.”
Generally, all U.S. citizens 18 years or older who are or will be residing outside the United States during an election period are eligible to vote absentee in any election for federal office. In addition, all members of the uniformed services and their family members who are U.S. citizens may vote absentee in federal, state and local elections.
Once filled out and mailed to the applicant’s local voting official in their state of residence, the FPCA acts as a request for absentee ballots for any elections to be held that year. The Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) is available to all U.S. citizens from local voting assistance officers and the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) Web site, at www.fvap.gov.
“The FPCA should be completed and submitted every year,” added Truman. “Not only does it act as an absentee ballot request form, but it also informs the local voting election official of the Sailor’s current mailing address and confirms voting registration.”
Voters in state primaries will select their party’s candidates for state and federal offices, such as governor, U.S. senator, and members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Dates for the 2006 state primaries are scheduled throughout the year. Encouragement and help TO VOTE and not who/what to vote for.
This is so important to get the word out for all of our Troops. I know how much of a pain it can be trying to get those Absentee ballots. If only Congress would allow voting on base, it would make it easier.
When I was in, (Back in the old days) the sarge would come around offering ballot requests for "those of you who are old enough" which excluded about 90% of us.
