It doesn't seem that life has much meaning at all to them does it?

Yes, they value life differently than us, as do Koreans, Russians, folks from Peru, just to name a few.
That may come from your view of the world you live in - I look out the window here (it has glass in it and I have heat, electric and clean running water) and I see a nice park.
Others look out the hole in their wall and see a fetid slum. Still others sleep "under the stars".
