WIGGINS, Colo. -- Three coaches at Wiggins High School have reportedly been suspended after one of them allegedly taped a student to a weightlifting bench for several hours as punishment for disruptive behavior, according to a broadcast report.
A coach with 30-years experience used athletic tape to restrain the 13-year-old boy, covering his eyes, mouth and whole body, according to the boy's mother Stacy Robinson. Coaches refused to untie the boy even after he urinated on himself, she said.
"(I'm) very angry, there is no excuse for this," said Robinson.
A coach who allegedly tied the boy and two other coaches who witnessed the incident have been suspended with pay, according to Wiggins school Superintendent Sharol Little.
"For this to happen is hard for all of us, so I guess I want to give some certainty and assurance to our parents that we're doing all we can with the facts that we have to make sure that it doesn't happen again," she said.
At least 60 people witnesses the incident.
"You always here stuff on TV about things like this happening to kids and you think there has got to be another side to this story, this kid has to be horrible for something like that to happen, the coach just snapped, that wasn't the case here," Robinson said.
That's not the kid in question.
It's from a Methodist church site.
"bighting"???
No, it's a stupid question because it is hypothetical and therefore unanswerable. You knew this when you asked it, which is why you asked it. Why not just agree to disagree? You get what you want anyway: A teacher will get fired and possibly imprisoned, and a 13 year old that may grow up to be an interior decorator.
If somebody did this to any of my kids, I would beat them to death with a baseball bat. I'm serious.
Haven't a clue. It's just an image that popped up when I googled "duct tape kid".
Wasn't the one I was looking for...
You wouldn't check out the facts or want to know if it really happened as someone told you first? What if you were gone and something had happened to your horse and she had been sedated and restrained to prevent further damage. I read somewhere that a woman covered a frantic horse's eyes with her shirt and led the horse out of a burning barn once. I guess it calmed her.Look, I'm not condoning this type of behavior. I'm just saying, did it really happen as reported. I have a lot of concerns about public schools but I don't want to let my bias blind me.
If they lose their jobs, they can always find work at the college level.
But once you read that the kid's eyes and mouth were tapes up for "several hours" your "restrained for his own safety" theory falls apart rather quickly.
I wouldn't.
But they'd wish I had.
No kidding :')
The problem I have with some of the comments in this thread is (a.) I can go to the archives and find a jillion threads that call public school teachers little better than day-old afterbirth, but when it suits some folks' purposes they're willing to let a public school teacher get by with near if not actual criminal assault, and (b.) there's an element here who thinks that if we go back to the "old days" of stomping hell out of kids and forcing them to mind out of sheer fear and "making men out of them," we'll reverse all the bad stuff that's happened in the last 40 years, which IMHO is silly.
Since when did hypothetical become impossible to answer? It's pretty straight forward anyway. Either you would have no problem with this being done to your child for a small infraction on their part or only if they were physically violent towards others. I didn't realize you confused so easily, I won't bother you anymore.
But like my dad used to say, "don't keep such an open mind that your brains fall out."
The problem here is that teachers are forced to get creative. Back when I went to school creativity wasn't required as the teacher could take you out in the hall and administer discipline with a wooden paddle.
I have found over the years that fear is a great motivator to get someone to do the right thing or correct a wrong behavior. It worked on me and I, in turn, have used it on my boys.
send them all on a hiking trip....
My parents certainly used it on me, and I certainly use it on my kids, but I think there's a difference between instilling a little healthy fear and terrorizing.
Why no comment from the father?
I remember Mr. Stallworth's wooden paddle... one inch thick and holes drilled in it. He didn't need athletic tape.
No one deserves abuse by a public school teacher/coach. These folks are mostly nuts and you don't want them laying a hand on your kid. Look at "zero tolerance" where they suspend a student for drawing a picture of a gun. Also, many high school coaches/teachers tend to be emotionally stunted people who are reliving their unresolved high school battles and cliques. The sexual abuse of teens in the public schools is a good example of teachers acting out.
