Didn't the levees break in the wee hours of aug. 30, the day after Katrina struck? If memory serves, everyone breathed a sigh of relief on Aug 29th and then we woke up to a flooded New Orleans next day.

Yep, there was a lot of initial relief -- even celebration -- that the hurricane hadn't been as bad as had been feared. I was watching the New Olreans TV coverage live on the 'net and there was a considerable amount of time between "phew!" and "uh oh!"

Yes, the storm "missed" New Orleans, the reporters all said the city was saved...then early that evening the levees started breaking (as the waters upstream filled up Lake Ponchatrain, then the canals).....the first helo over the city showing extensive flooding was mid day, day 2.

If I recall, the winds had to drop below 50 mph or something like that.

As you can see from this log (which was widely acclaimed for its storm blogging), there actually were several reports of levee breaches in local media at around 9AM to 10AM that morning (29 Aug). And the NWS (I suspect it was the local NWS office) did issue a flood warning based on a report of a levee breach that morning. I watched FNC, the Weather Channel, and my local CBS affiliate all day that Monday and I don't remember seeing a single report about a levee breach and certainly they did not seem to understand the significance of those reports. Why am I not surprised to see that none of the news media seems to be even slightly interested in what they were reporting then.

Search4Truth was there for the whole thing. Perhaps he can share the timeline. He was in Lakeview by the 17th Street Canal breach.
