From what I've heard of East Palo Alto, it is entirely believable that he found the gun in the street.
Hey, I went to school in the 70s, in NYC and this never happened to me.
Why couldn't he have just waited until Social Studies?

You heard right. Not somewhere I'd go after dark. My daytime visits there haven't been that inspiring either.
I used to describe a place I worked in Menlo Park as "Just a pistol shot from East Palo Alto"...
One of the company vehicles had the windshield shot out one night, too. Nice place!
Years ago, there was an industrial business I had to service in East Plao Alto. It was down a long wide alley with auto shops and wrecking yards and of course, some of the area's finer homes (snicker). Anyway, driving down this alley was like running the guantlet.
Problem: Latrell sells Jose a dope gat at skool, claimin it ain't jacked, fo' some cheddar and don't be wantin to bust no cap on nobody.
Solve for: How much time will elapse before five-oh busts yo butt
If I recall correctly, Palo Alto High School is on El Camino, right across the street from Stanford University. He may have found the gone in East Palo Alto, but this school is not in a "bad area."
On Hamilton Ave?
I used to ride my bike through the back streets of East Palo Alto just to look around. It was no more dangerous than biking around on the west side of Chicago ;-)

Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP were busted for keeping "Palo Alto" on their business cards when they moved to East Palo Alto, so they simply started handing out guns with their phone number in place of the serial number.
Hey, they were lawyers - it was good marketing in more ways than one.
Guns grow on trees in East Palo Alto and gumball machines spit out slugs.
Also known as Browbeat, Phlog'em and Harass'em.
In Philly in the 50's nobody would have ratted you out; at least not in our neighborhood.
