Sometime ago my black manicurist said to me, "why are you so nice? Do you have some black blood?" To which I smiled and said to her, "No, but didn't you know? Souls have no color."
Your story rings a bell with me. A lot of the people I work with are not-too-well-educated blacks, mostly women. They've been surprised to find that some of us whites are pretty nice. We actually have some things in common! They can't believe it.
