I think you are quite intelligent enough to get my meaning.
Grant was a perfect modern General in every sense of the word. Lee was trained and bred in a style of warfare that died with the advent of the rifled gun. Lee would not do what Grant & Sherman did to achieve victory. He would not make war on civilians, and therefore was unable to break the will of the north, like Sherman did to the South during his March thru Georgia. Total warfare was not in his comprehension. The only Confederate Officers that had foresight in those tactics were Longstreet & maybe N.B. Forrest. If Lee had carried out a scorched earth policy and invaded the North in 1861, instead of fighting a defensive war, things might have been different.
