N.J. Nurse Gets Consecutive Life Terms
By GEOFF MULVIHILL, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago
Killer Charles Cullen has been sentenced multiple consecutive life sentences in prison and will not be eligible for parole for 127 1/2 years.
Relatives of the victims of New Jersey's worst serial killer lashed out at Cullen, a former nurse, during his sentencing hearing Thursday, calling him "the monster" and blaming him for wrecking their lives.
"My heart, it aches for my son," said Mary Strenko, whose 21-year-old son was Cullen's youngest victim. "I walk around with a hole in my heart."
Cullen, 46, was convicted for 22 murders and the attempted murders of three others in New Jersey.
Relatives fondly recalled their loved ones, but also explained how the killings and their aftermath damaged marriages, careers and report cards.
"We will never feel safe in a hospital again," said John Shanagher, whose father was murdered.
Thursday's hearing was the first chance for victims' relatives to confront Cullen in court, and about 60 appeared. Many were also hoping to hear Cullen explain why he committed the crimes, but his public defender has said that was unlikely.

Would someone tell me again why Cullen should be allowed to live after what he has done?
The shock of the his death has been compounded by the fact that this so called nurse killed him.
This not justice. He should be placed in a pit with the relatives.
When Cullen was first arrested, several national journalists contacted me when they found out that we had served on the same ship. They quickly lost interest when they found out that I couldn't remember ever meeting him.
Apparently because he just murdered people in New Jersey.
Then she said she would take it to her parents and say "What is wrong with kitty?". Then she said she would give it love therapy (what ever that is) so as to revive it.
Creepy, I know.
That is creepy and scary....
This "nurse" should be give a few old fashion methods of punishment from the dark ages.
So, IIRC, she said that it was in those days that she knew she wanted to become a nurse.
We just hope that these crazy people (as this health care professional) foul-up so as to get caught.
Sounds pretty close to Munchhausen(sp?) syndrome.
ABC radio news just said 11 life sentences.
there's an AP corerection just out (imagine that - AP getting it wrong)
AP is never wrong! Ever!
It MUST be Bush's fault.
Funny thing, she said that I was smart and that I made her brain do back flips....
Having said that, I didn't think she was smart and further, I don't think she understood what she was telling me when she confessed her strange behavior.
But get this, she told me that she would kill the cat then revive it as if it was a cute story, she told the story when she was 21 years old and 1 year from graduation with an RN bachelors.
Early on in my undergraduate years I realized that any fool/moron/gorilla could make it through college if that was their song to sing, don't be impressed by college degrees.
Also, this gal didn't realize that some would argue or suggest that serial killers exhibit behavior such as that of her childhood. Apparently, some argue that serial killers often have behavior that is abusive to animals.
Yeah, I was shocked... the scary thing was I dated this chic.

I once saw a documentary that had secret video recordings of a women blowing into the air tube of her child so that she could get attention from a Nurse. The child would wince in agony and pain.
How did this guy operate ?...would someone in the hospital just suddenly die? did he seek out really sick people?
Patients are not really in a position to question or argue with a nurse who comes in with an injection.
He often did his dirty deed in the middle of the night.
Most people do not think they need a private nurse at their loved one's bedside when they're in a hospital. He worked in some very good hospitals. ALL hospitals have very lax supervision when it comes to this type of thing.
Cullen murdered people in Pennsylvania where he will be going on trial next.
