Despite his successful dark passage of the weekend past, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger still has substantial lingering resentment with which to contend. Among two groups which in many quarters are viewed as having little in common. Republicans and members of the press.
In addition to continuing questions about where he really stands among the independents and moderate Democrats whom he must appeal to in order to win re-election, there is a continued resentment on the right. And not just among the conservative activists who feel they were rolled by the governor’s operation at the state Republican convention just past. Which is a problem for him, since he must have the high turnout among Republicans which he did not have for his “Year of Reform” initiatives in last November’s special election.
A Virginia-based polling firm, American Viewpoint, polled 800 likely Republican voters a week ago on Arnold. Asked if it was right or wrong as Republicans to criticize the governor, 65 percent said it was right to criticize him. Only 26 percent said it was wrong. Measuring Schwarzenegger’s $222 billion infrastructure plan against a pay-as-you-go alternative dedicating one percent of the state budget to infrastructure without additional borrowing or taxes found Arnold on the wrong end of a 67 percent to 23 percent spread. And on his budget, 55 percent agreed with the following statement: “Republicans should oppose the state budget that Governor Schwarzenegger submitted to the state legislature because it is unbalanced, contains increases in fees and taxes and does not cut any wasteful government spending.”
There are different ways to ask such questions that could yield different results. But there is clearly substantial dissatisfaction with Arnold on the right and the adroit hardball which he and his team played in the Republican state convention has not made that go away.

The Bodyguard(s)

First Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with his new buddy, state Senator Tom McClintock, the conservative icon who helped the former action superstar tamp down a rebellion on the right in the Republican state convention in San Jose. The cerebral McClintock probably never thought he would grow up to be the bodyguard of the Terminator.
Now state Treasurer Phil Angelides launches the mass market phase of his drive for the Democratic nomination flanked by his even more physically unlikely bodyguard, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, an even greater icon to the left than McClintock is to the right.
The senator was, of course, highly laudatory about Angelides. He is a consistent voice for whats right, said Boxer. So many go with the wind. He is a man of vision.
People wonder, can he win?, she noted, addressing talk that he cannot. Yes, she said, hes a winner. Hes an organizer. He fights for people. He became party chairman in 1991 when no one thought two women could get elected to the Senate, referring to the then state Democratic chairmans central role in her difficult first election in 1992.
Making her eternal gratitude and admiration clear, Boxer recounted a conversation from that campaign in which she said Angelides told her: Im doing this for you and for my daughters. He put in the longest hours working to make it happen. Hes not a bodybuilder, she declared, hes a builder of dreams.
=====
Angelides helped get Boxer elected.
Do you still prefer him to Arnold?
I prefer no liberal, especially if they're a registered Republican or look like a weasel. But then the CRP knows that.
Conservatives, who will not accept a liberal, even one wearing lipstick and a GOP, coronation robe, are the CRP's biggest headache right now.
A well known, California ex-patriot remarked today.
If you lie down with dogs you are going to get fleas.
That remark, intended to highlight a present Democrat dilemma, seems appropriate to the CRP's current misadventure in expediency.
You know, it's not really surprising that Arnold and Tom have been able to forge a union of purpose against the Dems. They are both uniquely strong and independent.

We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldnt make any sense at all.
- Ronald Reagan, 1965
Did you see the extent that Team Arnold went to silence conservatives?

6. The resolution to oppose the increase in the minimum wage was killed in the Sundheim appointed Resolutions Committee--the decision was NOT the McClintock position
But, the real story was the assets used by the Governors people, versus the assets used by the CRP conservatives.
The Governors people:
1. Hired staff
2. Did numerous mailings
3. Did automated phone calls
4. paid for folks to come to the convention, for hotel, food, registration etc.
5. Lobbied the delegates
6. Asked for votes
7. Created a "whip" operation for the votes
8. Did a major proxy drill
9. Rumors have it that the Guv's people spent between $20-100,000 on the effort
--money that was donated to beat Democrats, not for CRP resolutions
CONSERVATIVE VICTORY AT REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
Now that is spin.
LOL. See my post above yours. I agree, its spin to call it victory, but some of the details were interesting.
If one does not acknowledge the faults they can never be corrected.
It's also called free speech.

Ronald Reagan had Kuchel in mind when, a week after the election, he told Los Angeles County Young Republicans that, "We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals of our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the party over to the so-called moderates wouldn't make any sense at all."
Yes, Frank really labored to get the point just right. Not too much, too early, to give away the plot but just enough at the end to appease his gracious hosts. I imagine the voluntary donation to his blog arrived, as promised, in Tuesday's mail.
In fairness he did admit that he had been invited to a special audience with the aristocracy the prior week because of his influence within the CRP and I'm guessing that's when he received the rough draft for his blog.
I would have posted Frank's cloaked version of the now well know mantra but it was written by the same folks who wrote the speech for McClintock at Saturday's luncheon and provided the scripted responses for FO/DL all day Sunday on this forum.
The monotony of the orchestrated capitulation was driving me nuts by dinner time on Sunday.
Surely you jest!!!
I hope not. Here's what I told him,
"Methinks you have one of those new front-loaded washers with a high speed spin cycle."
Fair Opinion, the new minority.
Not likely.
Many speculate that both the FairOpinion and doodlelady accounts are actually late generation SQL servers running word recognition software.
Both servers are driven by a sophisticated algorithm which hunts down the word "conservative" on web based forums. After finding the search string, the algorithm analyzes the context in which it was used. If the algorithm determines that the context was positive, both servers are directed to destroy the poster who used the term.
LOL!!!
