'The Kosovo Model' – Independence Invoked in Tiraspol
Jurnalul National ^ | march 1st 2006.

The officials in Tiraspol are looking forward to the end of the negotiations regarding the future statute of the Kosovo province, and they seem to have already decided to ask for the independence of Transnistria, if such a solution is reached in the Balkans.

The officials in Vienna that debate on the future statute of the Kosovo province have to be very careful, because a decision in favor of the independence of this region could mean a precedent that would determine Transnistria to ask for a similar treatment. This is how the President of the Parliament of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian Republic, Evgheni Sevciuc, sees this situation. He stated that the officials in his republic would organize a referendum regarding the independence, if the decision of the international community was for the independence of the Kosovo province. “We believe the citizens of this region have as many rights as the citizens in Kosovo, as far as the homologation of the state is concerned. We are prepared to organize a referendum and take the appropriate measures”, Sevciuc commented upon the first round of negotiations between the Belgrade and Pristina representatives

--------------------- And Romanian anwser ---------------------

Romania’s opinion about the Kosovo issue has been made public yesterday when President Traian Basescu took part in a meeting with his Macedonian counterpart, Branko Crvenkovski. The Romanian President stated that as “for the main problem at present”, the one regarding the future statute of the Kosovo province, Romania is against any modification of the present frontiers, and supports a “negotiated autonomy, within the EU autonomy criteria”. This is the “optimal solution that will not set any precedent”, Basescu believes.

thanks for the ping.

I think the romanian president is trying to avoid rocking the boat and ruffling feathers in the region, so he is being very careful with his answers.

Lets put the end to this circus and unite Moldova with Romania. With such kind of development Russian position in the settlement of the Trandnistrian conflict would be almost meaningless. Actually they can interfere only in Moldova, the Baltics and Caucasian republic size of countries.

Btw, I also don’t remember any conflicts that Poland had with Romania despite that we shared common border in the past. Obviously we had not any conflict with Serbia as well. In fact those three countries fought together against Turkish invaders.

Sooner or later Moldova will reunite with Romania, so Bucharest's position is completely understandable.

Serbia allways supported Romania as good neighbour and as for Transdniestr, they should get same authonomy in Moldova as Kosovo in Serbia. As i racall, there was another one region in Moldova that was in dispute.
