Abbott to Speak at Lincoln Day Dinner

LEAGUE CITY — Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a staunch supporter of the Ten Commandments display at the capital grounds and whose chief focus during his administration has been on cracking down on child predators, will be the guest speaker at the annual Galveston County Republican Party 2006 Lincoln Day Dinner.

The fund-raising dinner, which includes a silent auction, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center, 2500 South Shore Blvd. in League City. State Rep. Larry Taylor of Friendswood will be master of ceremonies and Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett will introduce Abbott.

Abbot also has been a key backer of the Texas redistricting plan, the constitutionality of which the U.S. Supreme Court will consider arguments today. Democrats have criticized the statewide map, created in 2003, as a politically motivated move by Republicans to win more congressional votes.

But Abbott and other Republicans argue that the map is fair and are hopeful the court will support it.

“We expect the court will agree with the unanimous judgment of the three-judge federal court that the Texas redistricting plan is wholly constitutional,” Abbott said in a statement.

Republican Party Chairman Kevin Corcoran said the event is the major fund-raiser event of the year and that he expected about 300 people to attend.

“Our main focus is running a successful primary,” Corcoran said. Two issues that the county Republican Party is looking forward to hearing about from elected officials, Corcoran said, is the status of the redistricting lawsuit and education financial reform.

Daniel Hodge, campaign director for Abbott, said that the attorney general would talk about his “work to protect children and families, preserving tax payer dollars and defending Texas values.”
